as a food stamp user, it;s OK wit me. I’m down wit it what state is it? Don’t knock it ’til you try it~

Its just a way for restaurants to make more money. And Restaurants do sell food so it is technically not anything nefarious on the part of the person with the food stamps.
Btw, food stamps technically do not exist anymore. Its called “snap” now and its comes on an ebt card. http://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/http://hawaii.gov/dhs/self-sufficiency/b…http://jeffersoncountyfarmersmarket.org/…http://dss.sd.gov/images/ebtcard.gif

  3. Howard L Says

I’m very opposed to it but not for the reasons mentioned. It’s because there’s an underground market for food stamps and many recipients sell them for cash at a discount. I’d require food stamps to be used only in food stores, only for food, and only with positive ID of the recipient to use them

I am unemployed and living where I can. My refrigerator doesn’t work and the landlord won’t fix or replace it. I won’t use the stove because cockroaches have taken it over. Every time I turn it on they are everywhere. I try to move but new landlords won’t rent to someone who is unemployed. Using food stamps at a restaurant, not a luxury restaurant, but a local food provider would have been nice. My state doesn’t yet allow it.
Not all food stamp recipients are lazy good-for-nothings. Don’t generalize. Some of us are truly out of work and looking and trying to survive.

  5. Bflowing Says

The amount one receives per month for “food stamps” is fixed. If a family can scrimp on meals for a couple of weeks in order to have one meal out, why not.
Most are there because of forces beyond their control. Economic, natural, and medical disasters can strike any household.
Or should we all just serve them gruel everyday?

  6. David Says

@ Bflowing…really? They deserve a night out on your dollar? Why don’t you volunteer to support a family on food stamps and use your money instead of wasting my money?
Are the restaurants required to accept food stamps? This would be an entirely different overstepping of boundaries by our beloved politicians.

I live in a rural frontier state, which has granted that waiver. As many in Wyoming do not have ready access to grocery stores (and there are MANY small towns in Wyoming with no grocery store), the state granted authority for SNAP benefits to be used in local eateries to purchase meals. I do not have an issue with the policy, as the waiver was granted for very good reason.

  8. MoodyRed Says

It is absolutely riduculous. Food stamps need to be used to last a month, and this is not an efficient way of of using them.
I believe it is morally wrong as many children will be hungry before the month is up…

I’ve always been told that if I cannot afford a tip, I should not go to the restaurant. But then specialty food delivery services like Shwan’s have been taking food stamps for a long time.

  10. Paladin Says

that sounds like an inefficient use of taxpayer dollars, you can easily feed 3 or 4 people for what it would cost 1 person at a restaurant

  11. Bob GThe return of Says

Just plain dumb! Eating in a restaurant is far more expensive than buying food and preparing it. It is a waste of money and should not be allowed.

    $60.00 for a dinner at red lobster… $60 dollars at wegmans… 3 days worth of food…
YUP sounds about right for the mind-set of todays YOU OWE ME crowd…

  13. Scales of Justice 3 Says

This is a totally bad idea. You will be giving undisciplined people a source of
    use that requires no discipline.

Those 8 states are setting the wrong precedence.

Interesting how they cash them in.
“this guy bought a $40 steak with food stamps” Yeah right.
