I live in Florida, and this isn’t something I’m going to be doing in the near future. Perhaps in a year or so I’ll be getting a new puppy and I’m very interested in the internet as a potential source. I’ve ruled out a breed rescue, as the German Shepherd rescue near me has extremely stringent rules they require be followed if you want a puppy from them… and living in an apartment automatically ensures you won’t be approved.
The only German breeder within hours of me breeds dogs with high work drive which I have no interest in owning. I want a German Shepherd from companion/show lines, a dog that lacks that intense focused work ethic(but doesn’t have the dopey personality that has creeped into such lines recently either).
So, getting to the point of my question: any tips for getting a puppy from an online source? I know obvious things to look for like places demanding direct payment, sites that offer more than one/two types of puppies, sites that offer puppies year round, they don’t have a valid number you can call… basically stuff that would tip you off to a bad breeder in general anyway.

It’s okay to find a breeder online, but there are some things to look for:
As you already said, breeders offering mixes or more than two types of dog. Breeders demanding payment immediately, ect. Breeders with fake numbers…and to tell with that one, get the number and call it. Then reverse the call and see if the state matches. If not, obviously a scam.
…but also:
Breeders willing to ship by airline. No responsible breeder would ever do that, because it stresses out the dogs and can send them into shock. Also, breeders who ship online don’t care about their dogs, because how can they know what kind of person the buyer is? If they ship, run for the hills.
Call the BBB and see if they’re registered. If not, find another breeder.
Look for reviews online. If there are many, it’s not just sour grapes.
If you’re going to find a dog online, ONLY consider places within driving distance. If you can’t go there yourself and see the grounds and at least one parent, you absolutely should not consider them. Never actually buy a dog online. There’s no way of guaranteeing that the dog will be healthy, friendly, or even the right breed. You could get anything, and most online contracts prevent returning an animal (not that you’d want to, because someone like that…). It’s absolutely stupid to purchase an animal online.
When you arrive, ask to see the litter mates as well as the actual puppy. Make sure the dog’s gums are nice and pink, that he’s active and has bright eyes. Watch him interact with the other puppies. Only go for active, fat puppies.
Also, when you get your puppy, take it to the vet within 24 hours. Better safe than sorry!
And keep in mind that while many of the traits you mentioned are genetic, all dogs require proper training. Germans are naturally alert, but enough exercise and training, and your dog will be fine.
If you think that’s the most convinient thing for you to do and you see the site and company is legit then don’t see why not, many people look for breeders nowadays over the internet. But im pretty sure you have a Humane Society you can try and visit sometime, ive seen German Shepard pups at ours here in Tampa. So go take a look, and trust me getting it from an online breeder will cost you 90 times more then going to a Humane Society but it’s upto you and our wallet
.
Yea, don’t get one. You’d be getting a dog with poor health and an unstable temperament. Why don’t you search for a breed rescue in your area that allows dogs to be adopted out to people who live in apartments?
The real problem here is that most ethical, reputable breeders I know do not advertise on the the internet!
Did you try looking on the AKC website for their breeder referrals.
Good Luck! *;*
My only advise to you for this is DON’T DO IT.
Go to a reputable breeder one associated with the AKC and check their showing/breeding lines.
Never buy a puppy online, there are too many scammers out there and you will always want to view a puppy and it’s mother before you purchase. It is rare for a breeder to have the father on the property for you to view, most reputable breeders will seek a male far removed from their own lines for breeding purposes, you rarely get both parents within the same household, only the old time show breeders have the experience to establish this. ie: they strive to better the breed and not all B’s are compatable to the home male, whether it be temperament/genetic problems or conformation.
You need 2 good dogs to produce GREAT puppies, not 2 dogs that are able to mate.
Lifetime guarantees are perfect. They state that if the puppy or adult is sick with an inherited illness, they’ll refund your purchase with either a new puppy or money, depending on the breeder and what you want. They also usually state that if you don’t want or cannot keep your dog in the future, they will take it back.
Ask how long the bitches rest between breedings. Every cycle is too short of a period, every other is really, really sketchy. 1-2 years between litters is what is recommended per *****.
There are lots of things, you’re going to want to do a bit of research for good and bad things when cruising sites.
If you want to keep this as your dog you will want to meet it and see if you like the personality. You do not want to get the dog and then think what the heck did I do. Also most good breeders would want you to meet dog first.
First of all, I think you are looking for a puppy online because you don’t want to be questioned about an apartment? Don’t do it!!! I had a dog for 8 years that I bought from a breeder because I lived in an apartment and the minute I had to move, I couldn’t find a place where I could keep my dog, especially a big dog like a german shepard, and I had to get rid of her..AND mine was just a minature collie. I would recommend to anyone that you wait until you purchase a home and you know that you can keep a dog forever. I think you should go to a shelter as well and save a life. Breeders that are advertised on the internet can be legitimate breeders, usually you can tell by looking at their reviews, but alot are not what they seem to be..Alot of them come from puppy mills or back yard breeders..Yes they do have german shepards at your local animal shelters and even at the local pounds. Often people have to get rid of animals due to a change in living conditions. Often it is from moving from one apartment to the other. Look on craigslist, you will see what I am talking about..alot of large dogs, that need good homes.
it’s better to get a puppy from a breeder. to ensure it’s own health
