How Much Of A Tax Return To Expect For This Income?

By pay online Posted in: payment

My husband hasn’t received his w2 yet, so I don’t know how much taxes were withheld in 2011, meaning I can’t put in accurate numbers in the calculators to determine what our return will be or if we will owe. I do know that we make it so his paycheck takes out the maximum amount of taxes every year to get back a bigger return.
So, he makes approx 26000 a year, and we have 3 children aged 5 and under. I have no income myself. Any educated guesses on what we might get back?
I’m very curious because we are hoping to use it to pay off some bills in advance, fix our van and stock up on necessities for the year to help supplement our income. We also want to put some in savings toward a future down payment on a house, assuming the return is big enough. It seems like his employers are taking forever getting the w2s back…guess I’m too impatient. :)
Thanks!

First off, you don’t “get” a return, you FILE a return. A tax return is the forms and schedules that you send to the IRS. If you get any money back, that’s called a REFUND.
Having too much tax withheld just to get a big refund is stupid, especially if you have 3 young kids in the house! He should be claiming 11 allowances on his W-4 so that NO federal income tax is being withheld. With 3 young kids in the house and his income, you’d STILL be looking at a large refund from the EIC and Additional Child Tax Credit even if NO federal income tax is withheld from his pay. If he files his W-4 as Single + 0 allowances, he’s having over $60 PER WEEK too much withheld from his pay. I’m sure that you could use an extra $60 per week when feeding 5 mouths and keeping a roof over your head! More than likely you’d be able to have had the van fixed when it broke instead of having to wait until tax season!
Even with no federal income tax withheld, you’d be looking at a refund of $7,216 from the EIC and ACTC as noted above. At Single + 0 on his W-4, they would withhold about $3,142 from his pay so the total refund would be $10,358.
Here’s another thing to chew on. The IRS has started delaying refunds when they look to be too large. The $7,216 isn’t an issue, but the extra $3,142 in tax withholding given your family size potentially IS an issue. If the IRS thinks that something is awry, your refund could be delayed until June or July when they receive his W-2 information.
Edit: I’m not saying that *you* are stupid. Please don’t take it that way! What you are doing certainly is, however, speaking from a financial standpoint. Sometimes I get a bit harsh in order to drive home a point and in your case I’ve gotten your attention so that’s what counts. I well remember struggling as a young father many years ago with only 2 other mouths to feed and it’s a LOT tougher these days!
There’s no need for him to have any federal income tax withheld from his wages until you’re on the sunny side of $50k per year or more. Filing his W-4 at Married + 10 or 11 allowances will ensure that you have enough money each payday to keep you from becoming stretched too thinly.

personal exemptions are $3700 each, you, your husband and each child, total of $18500, standard deduction for married filing jointly is $11600, now a total of $30100 non taxable
any income tax withheld should be refunded,
EIC for that income and 3 children is $3785 and the additional child credit should be $3000

Figure around 4855 for EIC, plus something for the additional child tax credit, plus whatever he had withheld. Without the exact numbers, can’t give you a closer answer.
You do understand that by having money withheld, you aren’t getting any EXTRA money in your refund, just getting your own money later?

Ball park guess would be $6-$8 k.
I am only guessing that going by my own experience…we have 2 children, and make $30k and we file married and 0 right now.
We normally, with EIC and ATC, get back $4-$6k.
