I don’t have a problem, sorta – but what is happening is the fast food lobbyist are trying to obtain this use in fast food/junk food locations. That is a problem. It is about their pocketbooks and not helping those in need.
I would approve of a dollar cap, say $10 for a meal for certain food stamp recipients daily. There are many vegetable, buffet locations in this price range. Most should and could purchase food to be prepared at home But we have some elders and disabled that can not or should not be cooking for themselves. If TANF benefits can be added to the SNAP card it should be just as simple to add some amount for restaurant use. My grandmother for example, was never on assistance, but in her later years had no business trying to cook. Anything more than a sandwich or cereal was unsafe. She also had lost her sense of smell and would consume spoiled things. They can forget to turn off the stove/oven and even be injured by the attempt to cook. I know families could/should step in but not all can or will. Some elders refuse to give up their last bit of Independence and move into assisted living or can’t afford to. Meals on wheels do not serve many areas. Yes – allow it with reason.

If a business wants to accept them then so be it.
BTW, I know some restaurants that can prepare a basic meal cheaper than what I can. That is just reality with grocery prices today. I dont consider going to Golden Corral or Taco Bell a luxury… but if I was poor I could see those places becoming staples. Thanfully, my family is in a better condition than that but I can see some restaurant chains having cheaper food than grocery stocks.

Don’t get me wrong. I think the welfare system is out of control, but you can’t tell people how to use it. I don’t think people are sitting down at a steak house. What would you say if it is a single Mom running around. Picking up the kids, and rushing to get to work. Maybe she drive though BK. I think this is the least of the problem with welfare. Keep in mind, if they only get X amount of money on the card, and they blow it all at a restaurant what do they do then? I think this is just part of the story.

More evidence that our welfare programs need serious reform. EBT cards should be used solely for the basics, and not junk or luxuries such as eating out at ANY restaurant to include fast food.

  6. Dark Night Says

Fraud, waste, and abuse. Food stamps are to feed the impoverished. Not pay for lavish meals at restaurants.

  7. Anonymous Says

It is really stupid. Food stamps are supposed to be a safety net, not a hammock.
