OK a little over two months ago i had lost my school backpack. Or at least i thought that is what happened. so anyway i went to my school’s security department and asked if anything had been turned in and of course nothing had. So, in short i assumed i misplaced it or it had been stolen but i didnt want to jump to any conclusions. So 2 months later,Today, a police officer comes to my door this morning and when i answer he asks me if i was missing a backpack. so i explained that i think i had one stolen about two months ago so they say that they were investgating a suspect for local burglaries and at this suspects house they saw something wedged in between his walls of his house and sure enough it turned out to be my backpack. Now since im a college student i had several books in there some qte expensive. But in the guys hpuse he had a leak and it had leaked water all over my backpack ultimately destrying anything inside. All i had inside was 4-6 books and a 150$ calculator. so i explained to the officer that now i wouldnt be able to sell these books back to my college because of the damage so i thought i should be rembursed for the books and the calculator. so he agreed and before he left he told me to go online and find the prices of the the books and the calculator and give him a call tommorrow with the grand total. But come to find out the kid who to my backpack is only 15 which lucky for him makes him a minor. So my question is, assuming this kid doesnt have the money to pay for a of my stuff he ruined and his parents/guardian cant cover it, then what would happen?? I mean i hoping that doesnt just mean that im out of luck because if so thats basically like he just got away with it with no repercussions?? and FYI i live in illinois and im 21 years old. So if anybody could explain what would happen if this comes to that i would appreciate it.

The 15 yr old is already in trouble for theft, so the parents are aware of what their kid had done. They should be help liable for the calculator and books. File this and get in touch with the same police officer that you talked to before and take it from there.
He could serve some jail time instead of paying a fine or restiution. This teenage punk criminal should see what life is like in a holding cell
